Ways to Display Your Television – The Best Display Options for Your Set
Over the past decade, televisions have become larger, lighter, thinner, and more affordable — all good things. But the new size and dimensions of modern television sets have created challenges and opportunities for interior decorators, which is why the Baer’s Furniture design team has assembled these tips for decorating around your television set.
TV Decorating Challenges
Because of the relative inexpensiveness of new television sets, most people opt for bigger screens to maximize their viewing pleasure. That means:
The TV will require a larger console if that’s the method you choose to display your set.
The TV will require a large amount of unbroken wall space if you want to mount it (i.e., no windows, doors, thermostat, etc.)
Gaming consoles, cable boxes, and other accessories may create a cable management issue regardless of how you display your television.
TV Decorating Opportunities
Most people don’t think of the opportunity that a large black rectangle can create, but there are a few.
The television provides a focal point for the room.
If you purchase a large console with cabinets, you can store other items, allowing you to declutter your space.
It gives you a good reason to spend time with your gorgeous living room furniture.
Check out how the Hooker Furniture Big Bang Entertainment Console creates a space within a space for lounging and watching television. The spacious cabinets are a great place to hide away electronics, while the surface is a perfect area for objets d’art. This is a zen space that almost anyone would want to spend time in — whether the TV is on or off.
Television Display Options
When it comes to flatscreens, there are a few options. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
TV Consoles
Most TV consoles are made with cable and wire management in mind. Plus, as was previously mentioned, they provide a lot of storage.
If you’re in a small space, the television console may take up some floor area you don’t have. However, the hidden storage may be worth the tradeoff. For most homeowners, a TV console is a viable alternative to wall mounting, or they purchase a console to help them organize other electronics.
We love this Tommy Bahama Home maximalist interpretation of the television console. Their Ocean Club Pacifica Entertainment Console was designed as a standalone piece or to be paired with one or two Tradewinds Bookcases. This is a beautiful way to display collectible items, books, candles, antiques, etc.
Wall Mounting
Wall mounting a television has become an increasingly popular option, and there is a lot to like about this solution. It essentially removes one of the dimensions of the television to a few inches, taking up almost no space.
If you have a small space, you can still have a large television as long as you have the wall area to accommodate it. However, wall mounting is never quite as easy as YouTubers would have you believe. You can end up seriously damaging your wall if you don’t use the proper mounting hardware.
Additionally, unless you want the power cord dangling from the set, you may want to contact a professional electrician with specific experience mounting television sets. If you have a larger set and you’re going to attempt to mount it on your own, have someone help you with the lift and mount.
Corner Mounting
Corner mounting was a much more popular option during the final days of the tube televisions and with the earlier HD sets. Instead of placing a TV on a console that’s designed to fit in a corner, the TV set is mounted in the corner using hardware specifically designed for this type of installation. All of the same cautionary words mentioned in the Wall Mounting section also apply here.
Smaller Set Consoles
If you have a smaller place or want to display a television set in the bedroom, you can either use a smaller console or a dresser.
This Tommy Bahama Home Royal Kahala Balboa Tropical Carved Door Chest has 11 shelves and is the perfect dimensions for a smaller set. It takes up a minimum amount of floor space and is tall enough so that you can see the TV over the footboard of your bed.
